To New Beginnings

A Valentine wish for new beginnings and the start of a heart journey –
expressed in the wondrous poetry of  John O’Donohue.

For a New Beginning

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.
For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.
It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

  1. I love this poem! Thank you so much for sharing it.

  2. This is wonderful, both your photo and the poem. If we would only listen to our souls and not our fears our lives would be so much fuller. I’m so glad you posted this poem today. It’s one I’ll be keeping and rereading regularly!

  3. What an amazing, wonderful poem! Every line of it rings with truth. I’ve saved it to revisit often as needed. Your image goes with it beautifully. It makes me think of launching out into that vast blue sky.

  4. What a beautiful poem, great pairing.

  5. What beautiful words, Brenda.
    Have a great weekend, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

  6. I’m intrigued–the image and the poem go together so well. The unusual angle of your image suggests something different, perhaps the new beginning that is the subject of the poem, but I’m left wondering–what will Brenda do next? (I’ll be here to find out, that’s for sure.)

  7. The sky is the limit…or is it, does it go further than we can imagine. I do believe that the human potential knows no boundaries, only those we impose upon ourselves. I feel that this poem must be very personal to you and reflects your deeply felt philosophy.
    May this be another year, built upon others, for you to soar. love sharon

  8. An inspiring poem, Brenda. Your glorious image illustrates that excitement of new beginnings so beautifully! Happy Valentine’s Day to you, my friend.

  9. The poetry is so wonderful. I may need to post it in a place I see everyday. The image has me standing in a place of perceived safety, but the sky is beckoning me to rise up and meet it. Beautiful words and photography! Happy Valentine’s Day to you too!
